How NFC Powers Your TapTag

How does it work?

An NFC chip is embedded in your TapTag during production. When an NFC-enabled phone or reader gets within 2–4 inches of the tag, the reader powers the chip and reads its data, a URL, a vCard, plain text, an app-launch instruction, or the chip's own unique ID.

Most consumer use cases are URL-based: phone reads the URL, opens the link, no app needed.

For access control, ticketing, or cashless flows, your event platform's reader uses the encoded UID to look up the credential in your system.

📱

Universal Compatibility

Works with any NFC-enabled smartphone, iPhones (iOS 13.1+), Android, Samsung, Pixel, plus enterprise readers, handhelds, and turnstile gates. ISO 14443 / 13.56 MHz standard.

🔌

No Battery, Ever

NFC chips are passive. They draw their tiny bit of power from the reader's signal, so your tags work indefinitely, through rain, heat, and rough handling. Built to last past your event and into the keepsake era.

🔗

Re-Programmable URLs

Update where the tag points after it's printed. Push attendees from a check-in page to a live bracket, then to a post-event highlight reel, without ever reprinting the credential.

Built into every TapTag

What a Tap Can Do

Tap-to-pay infrastructure is already in your guests' pockets. TapTags turns each event credential into the front door for it, access, content, payments, intelligence, all on one chip. Most flows work app-free; the advanced ones plug into the scanner stack you already trust.

Tap-In Access Control

Layered access to restricted zones, VIP rooms, backstage, hospitality. Frictionless entry, faster than barcode, and harder to counterfeit.

Movement & Attendance Tracking

Venue intelligence on session traffic, dwell time, and patron journeys. Real-time gate counts plus post-event analytics for sponsors and ops.

Lead Retrieval

Exhibitors and recruiters tap attendee badges to capture contact info instantly. No re-keying business cards, no app sync after the show.

Cashless & Sponsor Activations

Link a credential to a spending wallet or sponsor offer. Tap-to-redeem promos, tap-and-go transactions, every interaction tracked as proof.

Digital Authentication

Counterfeit-proof. Each chip's encoded UID can't be visually copied. A printed knockoff fails the gate scan even if the artwork looks identical.

Live Brackets & Rosters

Tap a player or coach credential to open the live bracket, schedule, results, or full roster, updated as games close. Fans, scouts, parents all served.

Event Info & Wayfinding

Master schedule, venue maps, parking, weather, sponsor list. One tap on the credential beats hunting through a 40-page program PDF.

Post-Event Keepsake

After the event, repoint the same tag to a photo gallery, highlight reel, or alumni page. The credential becomes a living keepsake long past gate-day.

Each TapTag ships pre-encoded with a unique ID matched to your registration, access-control, or lead-retrieval platform. UID list available by request for client-side platform loading.

Works With Your Scanner Stack

Built on the same open NFC standard as tap-to-pay and hotel keys, so it works with the readers you already use, no proprietary platform required.

The Standard

13.56 MHz / ISO 14443

The chip standard nearly every reader on the market supports

Every TapTag ships with a 13.56 MHz NFC chip on the ISO 14443 standard, the same standard used by smartphone tap-to-pay, hotel room keys, transit cards, and virtually every event RFID/NFC platform.

UID-Based Encoding

Pre-Encoded UID List

Plug-and-play with your registration / access platform

Each chip carries a unique factory-burned ID plus an optional URL or NDEF payload we encode for you. We deliver the UID list by email so your platform team can preload it, no surprises on gate-day.

Verified Before Production

Compatibility Check

No mystery hardware on event day

Send us a reader spec or sample chip and we'll confirm compatibility before production starts. If your platform needs a specific chip family or encoding format, we'll match it, or tell you up front if it's not feasible.

Already running a different platform? Send us the reader make & model and we'll verify chip compatibility (13.56 MHz / ISO 14443) and encoding format before we ever start production.

Why they keep us in the rotation, year after year

Real words from real clients and state, regional & national partners.

We’ve worked with the Skillzys® team for the past few years and it’s always been easy. Clear expectations, strong delivery, and they’re quick to adjust based on feedback and our needs. The customer service and overall relationship is a big reason we keep them in the rotation. The credentials have become part of the event, athletes continue to wear them long after, which says everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do attendees need to download an app to use TapTags?
Nope, basic TapTags use cases (open a URL, view a roster, hit a sponsor page, RSVP) work natively on any NFC-enabled smartphone, no app required. Advanced flows like cashless payments, layered access control, or session tracking pair with your scanner platform's hardware/app stack, not the attendee's. Most guests just tap and go.
Which phones support NFC?
All modern smartphones: iPhones (iOS 13.1+, with background tag reading on iPhone XS and later), all Android devices since 2013, Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and most Chinese OEMs. NFC has been a universal standard for over a decade. Older devices without NFC (rare in 2026) can still scan a backup QR code printed alongside.
Can I change the URL after the tags are printed?
Yes. Each TapTag's encoded URL points to a redirect we manage on your behalf, so you can update the destination anytime, from a check-in page on event day, to a live bracket during play, to a post-event highlight reel afterwards, without ever reprinting the tag. Just send us the new target and we update it.
How close does the phone need to be to tap?
2–4 inches, typically. NFC is intentionally short-range (that's part of the security model), the user has to deliberately bring the phone to the tag, no accidental scanning from across a room. Most guests just touch the phone to the credential and the link opens within a second.
Do TapTags have batteries? Will they expire?
No batteries. NFC chips are passive, they harvest a tiny burst of energy from the reader's signal each time they're tapped. As long as the chip isn't physically damaged (cut, snapped, or microwaved), the tag works indefinitely. Many of our credentials become long-term keepsakes that still work years after the event.
Can I track how many people tapped a TapTag?
Yes, if your tags route through our managed redirect service, every tap is logged with timestamp + chip UID + (optional) anonymized geo. We'll deliver a post-event tap report. For deeper analytics (heatmaps, dwell-time, gate-by-gate movement), pair with a venue intelligence platform like the ones in the Compatibility section above.
What if a guest's phone doesn't support NFC?
In 2026 this is genuinely rare, but we cover it: every TapTag can be printed with a backup QR code as a fallback. Phone scans the QR, opens the same destination URL. Belt and suspenders.
Can each tag have a different link or unique ID?
Absolutely. Each chip ships with a unique encoded ID (UID), and we can map every UID to a different URL or to a specific record in your registration/access platform. Common patterns: per-attendee profiles, per-staff badge access levels, per-batch sponsor pages, sequential athlete numbers. Send us your CSV/Excel and we'll handle the merge.
Will TapTags work with my existing scanner platform?
Probably yes, our chips operate on 13.56 MHz / ISO 14443, the NFC standard used by virtually every event RFID and access-control platform. Send us your scanner make & model (or a sample chip you've already deployed) and we'll confirm compatibility and encoding format before production. We can also deliver the encoded UID list by email so your platform team can preload it.
What materials are TapTags made from?
Standard tags are 30mil PVC (the same durable substrate as our PVC Event Credentials), with the NFC chip and antenna embedded between two laminated layers. They're rain-resistant, scuff-resistant, and built to survive a multi-day event. Two finishes are available, Matte and Gloss, and neither interferes with the chip.
What's the minimum order? What about turnaround?
MOQ is 10 tags, but most TapTags orders run 250–5,000+ for events. Production runs about 10–12 days from final artwork approval, plus about 7–8 days delivery by air with duties and shipping included, roughly 3 weeks door to door. Rush production is available; tell us your event date and we'll build the timeline.
Can TapTags be worn on a lanyard or wristband?
Yes, every credential shape on this page includes a lanyard slot or hole punch, so any of our stock or custom lanyards attach cleanly. The chip is positioned away from the slot so wear doesn't damage the antenna. See the "Add a Lanyard" section above for stock and custom options.
Can I customize the design and colors?
Fully. Submit your artwork (AI, EPS, PDF, PSD, or high-res PNG) and we'll proof a custom credential. Don't have artwork? Our creative team designs in-house using your logos and brand colors at no extra charge. Custom die shapes are available at 50+ qty. The chip embed never affects what you can print on the surface.
